Building the People Behind the Performance
The Gain Stage is a Washington State nonprofit strengthening the creative workforce of the Tri-Cities region.
Live events, festivals, and cultural productions depend on skilled professionals — sound engineers, lighting technicians, stage managers, producers, technicians, educators, and organizers. Yet clear, accessible pathways into those roles are often invisible or financially out of reach.
We build those pathways.
Through structured training, hands-on production experience, mentorship, and shared equipment access, The Gain Stage develops local talent and expands economic opportunity in the creative industries — especially for individuals who have faced systemic or economic barriers to participation. And we do it in a way that keeps the door open to everyone.
The Tri-Cities hosts a growing number of concerts, festivals, and public events. Without a trained local workforce, production roles are frequently filled from outside the region — exporting both income and opportunity.
At the same time, many local residents with interest in music and the arts lack:
- Awareness of behind-the-scenes career pathways
- Access to training and equipment
- Professional networks
- Clear next steps toward paid work
The Gain Stage addresses this gap by creating visible, practical, and affordable entry points into the creative economy.
The Gain Stage creates accessible entry points into music and the arts while building real-world skills and career pathways in local creative industries.
We combine workforce development with community access — ensuring that opportunity is not limited to those already "in the room."
1
Creative Workforce Workshops
Technical and production-focused training in:
- Audio engineering
- Lighting and stage operations
- Event production and logistics
- Equipment handling and setup
- Instrument basics and maintenance
Workshops are hands-on and skills-based. No prior experience is required.
2
Production Practicum
Participants gain real-world experience embedded in regional events and venue partnerships. Training is not theoretical — it is applied within live production environments.
We emphasize transferable skills, professional standards, and collaborative team dynamics.
3
Equipment & Resource Library
Access to instruments and production gear reduces financial barriers to participation. Shared resources allow participants to build competence before personal investment becomes necessary.
Cost should not determine who gets to explore creative careers.
4
Volunteer-to-Leadership Pathways
Volunteer engagement is structured, developmental, and skill-building. Participants can advance from introductory roles to increasing levels of responsibility, mentorship, and leadership within the organization and the broader creative ecosystem.
You do not need a résumé to start — just willingness to learn and contribute.
5
Funding & Opportunity Navigation
We track and share regional, state, and national arts funding opportunities so that individuals and organizations in our community do not miss out simply because information was inaccessible.
We prioritize outreach to individuals who have faced economic, educational, or systemic barriers to participation in the arts.
Programs are designed to be free or low-cost whenever possible, with shared resources and mentorship built into the structure.
Belonging is not an afterthought — it is foundational.
Outcomes & Impact Goals (Initial 12–24 Months)
- Train 40–60 participants annually through workshops and practicum experiences
- Develop a shared instrument and production gear library
- Establish partnerships with regional venues and event producers
- Create clear advancement pathways from volunteer to paid creative roles where possible
- Increase local workforce capacity in live event production
Long-term, The Gain Stage contributes to a more self-sustaining regional creative economy — one where opportunity stays local and talent development is intentional.
Music and cultural events are not incidental to community vitality. They require infrastructure, skilled labor, and coordinated effort.
By investing in people behind the scenes — not just performers — The Gain Stage strengthens the cultural and economic resilience of the Tri-Cities region.
And we do so in a way that keeps the door open wide.
